The School and College Textbook Publishing Process Workshop 7: Readability and Accessibility
Choose ONE date: 16 September 2026 OR 4 November 2026.
A 3-hour online workshop covering the following topic:
We need to ensure that LEARNING is happening - and that we are not merely teaching content and skills. Therefore our textbooks need to be both readable and accessible.
What is the difference?
Readability is a subset of accessibility.
All readable content should be accessible – but not all accessible content is readable.
Readability = How easy something is to understand
Accessibility = Whether someone can access and use it at all
Think of it like this:
Readability removes difficulty
Accessibility removes barriers
How they overlap (and where people get confused)
They overlap in areas like:
· Layout
· Structure
· Clarity
But accessibility goes further:
A text can be:
· Readable but not accessible
· Accessible but not readable
This workshop deals with the implications this has for the publishing process, giving practical advice and tools to assist publishers in getting this right.
Presented by Bernita Smith, an experienced education publishing professional.
